Our Story
Three movements,one claim.
1
The human fact.
Before there was commerce, there was making. Before there was an industry to weigh the economics of handcraft, there was a person, a material, and the impulse to form one into something the other could not be without that act.
That impulse is not decorative. It is prior to all the questions commerce asks about it. It predates those questions and survives them.
“We make still by the law in which we’re made.”
Splintered Light Workshop begins here — with the conviction that making things is what human beings are for, and that the dignity of the act has not diminished because the tools have changed.
2
The maker as craftsman.
The craftsman is not defined by the tool he uses. A CNC machine is not less dignified than a hand plane — it is a different tool in the same tradition.
Splintered Light Workshop does not claim to be rustic. Every piece is made by a person who knows the name of the person it is going to — often the address, the occasion, the family. That knowledge enters the work and stays there.
Particular, deliberate, responsible for what is made. Present, in the work, now.
3
Place is important.
A craftsman lives somewhere. That somewhere is in the work โ not because it is advertised, but because it cannot be otherwise.
The Sonoran light. The ochre walls of the desert Southwest. These are not brand assets. They are facts that enter the work through the person who does the making. They are present whether or not they are named.
The logic of making requires a person in a place who knows what they are creating โ and most production systems are built specifically to eliminate that person. We have not eliminated them. We have centered the whole enterprise on them.
Tucson, Arizona
The Sonoran Desert is not a backdrop. It is the work.
The workshop is located in Tucson, Arizona. Every piece produced here carries that provenance โ not as a marketing claim, but as an unavoidable structural fact.
The desert aesthetic that defines the flagship Sonoran Desert Address Sign is not applied decoration. It is the honest expression of where this work is made.

We make still.
The right has not decayed.
